AVAILABILITY AND UTILIZATION OF TEACHING RESOURCES FOR TEACHING BIOLOGY IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN IFE CENTRAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OSUN STATE

Abstract

The study investigated the availability and utilization of teaching resources for the teaching of Biology in senior secondary schools in Ife central local government area of Osun State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The sample consisted ten teachers and two hundred senior secondary schools' students that were selected using simple random sampling technique. One local government was selected from the state using simple random technique. Two research instruments tagged “Laboratory Resources Observation Checklist” and “Students' Attitude towards Teaching Resources Questionnaire (SATRQ)” were used for data collection. The result showed that 92.43%of teachers in the school affirmed that teaching resources were readily available while 7.5% of teachers in the school disagree. In addition, the result revealed the utilization of teaching resources for teaching Biology, which showed that (60.0%) of the available teaching resources were frequently used, 20.0% of the available teaching resources were fairly used while 20.0%> of the available teaching resources were not used. Finally, the result revealed the overall mean for the students' attitudes towards the utilization of teaching resources for teaching Biology which is positive (x= 53.67).The study concluded that there were available teaching resources, the teachers frequently utilize the teaching resources and students showed positive attitude towards the utilization of teaching resources in Biology in senior secondary schools in the study area. It is recommended that school authorities should encourage the teachers in making use of the available resources in the teaching of Biology.
