Assessment of competencies in vocational and education training (VET)programmes is crucial in ensuring students' readiness for the workforce. The study examined the assessment of vocational educational skills among university students across different academic disciplines. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive evaluation of vocational skills, including technical proficiency, problem-solving, and communication skills.
The sample consisted of 200 students from four major disciplines: Engineering,Business, Arts, and Sciences, selected through stratified random sampling technique. Quantitative data were collected using a standardized vocational skills survey, while qualitative insights were through semi-structured interviews with 40 students. The findings reveal significant variations in vocational skill levels across disciplines.
Engineering and Science students exhibited higher technical proficiency and problem-solving skills, while Business students excelled in communication skills. Students in non-technical fields reported a lack of sufficient hands-on learning opportunities. Key factors were identified influencing skill acquisition, including curriculum design, internship experiences, and industry partnerships. The results suggested that while current vocational education programmes are effective in certain areas, there is need for curricular reforms to incorporate more practical components, especially in non-technical disciplines. These findings provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers aiming to enhance vocational education and better prepare students for the workforce. This research addresses gaps in the literature and offers recommendations for improving vocational programmes.
